Bart D. Ehrman ist ein hoch angesehener Gelehrter und Autor auf dem Gebiet der Neuen Testament- und Frühchristentumsstudien. Er wurde am 5. Oktober 1955 in Lawrence, Kansas, geboren und wuchs in Kansas und Illinois auf. Ehrman besuchte das Wheaton College in Illinois, wo er seinen Bachelor-Abschluss erwarb. Anschließend erwarb er seinen Master of Divinity und seinen Doktorgrad am Princeton Theological Seminary.
Ehrman ist seit 1988 James A. Gray Distinguished Professor an der University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). Vor seiner Zeit an der UNC unterrichtete er vier Jahre an der Rutgers University. Während seiner Zeit an der UNC hatte er verschiedene Leitungsfunktionen inne, wie den Vorsitz der Abteilung für Religionswissenschaften und den Direktor der Graduiertenstudien. Er ist ein produktiver Gelehrter mit 21 veröffentlichten Büchern, zahlreichen Fachartikeln und Dutzenden von Buchbesprechungen in seinem Fachgebiet. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehören "Misquoting Jesus" und "God’s Problem", die beide New York Times-Bestseller waren.
Ehrmans Fachgebiete sind der historische Jesus, die frühchristlichen Apokryphen, die apostolischen Väter und die Manuskripttradition des Neuen Testaments. Er hat zahlreiche Auszeichnungen und Stipendien für seine Lehre und Forschung erhalten, darunter den UNC Undergraduate Student Teaching Award, den Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize für künstlerische und wissenschaftliche Leistungen und den Bowman and Gordon Gray Award für hervorragende Lehre.
Ehrman ist mit Sarah Beckwith, Marcello Lotti Professor of English an der Duke University, verheiratet. Er hat zwei Kinder, Kelly und Derek. Derzeit wohnt er in Durham, North Carolina.
