Georges Simenon

Georges Joseph Christian Simenon war ein belgischer Schriftsteller, bekannt für die Schöpfung des berühmten Detektivs Jules Maigret. Er gilt als einer der produktivsten Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts, mit fast 500 veröffentlichten Romanen und zahlreichen Kurzgeschichten unter seinem eigenen Namen und mehr als zwei Dutzend Pseudonymen. Obwohl er Belgien nach 1922 nie wieder bewohnte, blieb er bis zu seinem Tod belgischer Staatsbürger.

Simenons Schriftstellerkarriere begann im frühen Alter, als er mit 16 für die Zeitung Gazette de Liege zu schreiben begann. Seinen großen Durchbruch hatte er 1931 mit der Veröffentlichung seines ersten Romans mit Jules Maigret, Pietr-le-Letton. Während seiner Karriere schrieb Simenon 75 Romane und 28 Kurzgeschichten mit dem fiktiven Detektiv. Die Maigret-Romane wurden in alle großen Sprachen übersetzt und einige wurden in Filme und Hörspiele verwandelt. Zwei Fernsehserien wurden auch im Vereinigten Königreich produziert.

Neben der Maigret-Serie schrieb Simenon eine große Anzahl von "psychologischen Romanen" wie La neige était sale (1948) oder Le fils (1957), sowie mehrere autobiografische Werke, einschließlich Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948) und Mémoires intimes (1981). Seine Werke wurden in mehr als 50 Sprachen übersetzt und haben weltweit über 800 Millionen Exemplare verkauft. 1966 wurde Simenon mit dem Grand Master Award der Mystery Writers of America ausgezeichnet. Im Jahr 2005 wurde er für den Titel De Grootste Belg (Der größte Belgier) nominiert und belegte im wallonischen Version Platz 10.

Die Werke von Simenon wurden in mehr als 50 Sprachen übersetzt und haben weltweit über 800 Millionen Exemplare verkauft, was ihn zu einem der meistübersetzten und bestverkauften europäischen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts macht. Er gilt als Schriftsteller, der "eine hohe literarische Reputation mit populärer Anziehungskraft" (P.D. James) verband. Die Werke von Simenon werden weiterhin weit gelesen und studiert, und sein Schriftstellererbe wird noch heute gespürt.
