John Bellairs war ein gefeierter amerikanischer Autor, am besten bekannt für seinen Beitrag zum Gotischen Genre. Er wurde 1938 in Marshall, Michigan, geboren und besuchte anschließend die Notre Dame University, wo er einen Bachelor-Abschluss erwarb. Bellairs setzte sein Studium an der University of Chicago fort und erwarb einen Master-Abschluss in Englisch.
Bellairs' schriftstellerische Karriere begann Ende 1963, als er das Unterrichten mit dem Schreiben verband. Er verbrachte ein Jahr an der Shimer College, was mit dem berüchtigten "Grotesken Internecinischen Kampf" zusammenfiel. Diese unruhige Zeit am Shimer College inspirierte später einige von Bellairs' Werken. 1971 entschied sich Bellairs, sich auf das Schreiben hauptberuflich zu konzentrieren und das Lehren aufzugeben.
Im Laufe seiner Karriere erwarb sich Bellairs einen Ruf für seine einzigartige und fesselnde Erzählweise. Am bekanntesten ist er wahrscheinlich für seinen Kinderklassiker "Das Haus mit der Uhr in seinen Wänden", der 1973 veröffentlicht wurde. Ein weiteres bedeutendes Werk von Bellairs ist der Fantasy-Roman "Das Gesicht im Frost", der 1969 veröffentlicht wurde. Diese Werke und viele andere haben sichergestellt, dass John Bellairs seinen Platz als ein geliebter und einflussreicher Autor im Gotischen Genre gefunden hat.
