John Harvey ist ein renommierter britischer Autor, der hauptsächlich für seine Kriminalromane bekannt ist. Er ist Schöpfer der Charlie Resnick-Reihe, die von Jazz beeinflusst ist und in der Stadt Nottingham spielt. Neben der Resnick-Reihe hat Harvey über 90 Bücher unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen verfasst, darunter Jon Barton, William S. Brady, L.J. Coburn, J.B. Dancer, John B. Harvey, William M. James, Terry Lennox, John J. McLaglen, James Mann, Thom Ryder, J.D. Sandon und Jon Hart.
Geboren in Tufnell Park, Nordlondon, im Dezember 1938, nahm sein Vater ihn in ein Buchgeschäft in Kentish Town mit, um Kopien von Biggles zu kaufen. Mit fünf Jahren entwickelte er eine Vorliebe für Alison Uttleys Hasenbücher. Er zog in die friedliche Stadt Nottingham in den 1960er Jahren. Harvey hat eine starke Verbindung zu Nottingham, da er seine berühmte Charlie Resnick-Reihe in der Stadt ansiedelte. Sein Beitrag zur literarischen Landschaft der Stadt wurde 2009 anerkannt, als er einen Ehrendoktor (Doctor of Letters) von der Universität Nottingham erhielt. Bevor er hauptberuflich zum Schreiben überging, unterrichtete Harvey Englisch für über 12 Jahre in mehreren Colleges im Land. Er leitete Slow Dancer Press von 1977 bis 1999 und veröffentlichte Lyrik.
Harveys Schreibkarriere begann eher zufällig, als er Western und Romane für Motorräder und Jugendliche produzierte. Er hat auch für Fernsehen und Radio geschrieben, adaptierte Klassiker sowie populäre Serien. Sein erster Resnick-Roman, Lonely Hearts, wurde 1989 veröffentlicht und stand auf der Liste der 100 besten Kriminalromane des Jahrhunderts der Times. Er beendete die Serie 1998 mit Last Rites, obwohl Resnick seitdem periphere Auftritte in Harveys neuer Frank Elder-Reihe hatte. Der Protagonist Elder ist ein pensionierter Detective, der nun in Cornwall lebt. Der erste Roman in dieser Reihe, Flesh and Blood, brachte Harvey 2004 den Crime Writers' Association Silver Dagger ein. 2007 wurde ihm der Diamond Dagger für ein Lebenswerk und Beiträge zum Genre verliehen. Harvey ist auch ein großer Fan von Notts County.
