Karl Edward Wagner war ein erfolgreicher Autor, Dichter, Herausgeber und Verleger in den Bereichen Science-Fiction, Horror und Fantasy. Er wurde am 12. Dezember 1945 in Knoxville, Tennessee, geboren und studierte zunächst Psychiatrie, bevor er seine wahre Berufung in der Literatur fand. Elemente seiner medizinischen Ausbildung finden sich später in einigen seiner bedeutenden Werke wie "The Fourth Seal" und "Into Whose Hands".
Wagners Weltsicht war von Nihilismus, Anarchismus und Absurdität geprägt, die allesamt bedeutende Themen in seinen Werken wurden. Er integrierte häufig dunkle und gewalttätige Elemente, die seine Bewunderung für Sam Peckinpahs Kino widerspiegeln, insbesondere den Film "The Wild Bunch". Trotz seiner manchmal düsteren Perspektive verfügte Wagner auch über einen einzigartigen Sinn für Humor, der sich oft in seinen Geschichten zeigte. Er pflegte, nur halb im Scherz, eine familiäre Verbindung zum berühmten Opernkomponisten Richard Wagner zu beanspruchen.
