Patricia C. McKissack war eine hoch angesehene amerikanische Autorin, die vor allem für ihre Beiträge zur Kinderliteratur bekannt ist. Sie verfasste mehr als 100 Bücher, von denen viele zu erfolgreichen Serien wie "Dear America", "The Clone Codes", "Scraps of Time", "Messy Bessey" und "Miami Jackson" gehörten. Zu ihren bekanntesten Einzelwerken zählen "Color Me Dark", "Look to the Hills", "The Royal Diaries: A Slave Girl", "The Great Migration North" und "French Slave Girl".
Geboren am 9. August 1944, erstreckte sich ihre Karriere als Autorin über mehrere Jahrzehnte und mündete in zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Anerkennungen. Zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann, Frederick McKissack, gewann sie 1998 die Regina Medal. Frederick, der im April 2013 verstarb, war zuvor ein Zivilingenieur in der United States Marine, bevor er seine Militärlaufbahn aufgab, um gemeinsam mit seiner Frau hauptberuflich zu schreiben.
Neben ihrem Erfolg mit ihrem Ehemann erlangte McKissack auch als Einzelautorin bedeutende Anerkennung. Sie wurde mit dem Newbery Honor und dem Coretta Scott King Award für "The Dark-Thirty" und "Porch Lies" ausgezeichnet, beides ALA Notable Books. Des Weiteren arbeitete sie mit Jerry Pinkney an "Goin' Someplace Special" zusammen, das den Coretta Scott King Award gewann, und an "Mirandy and Brother Wind", einem Caldecott Honor Book. Patricia C. McKissack verstarb am 7. April 2017, hinterlässt jedoch ein reiches literarisches Erbe in der Kinderliteratur.
