Robert J. Sawyer ist ein hoch angesehener Autor von Science-Fiction, der für seine Fähigkeit bekannt ist, Wissenschaft mit Elementen von Mysterium und Religion zu verweben. Robert J. Sawyer wurde am 29. April 1960 in Ottawa, Ontario, Kanada geboren und wuchs in Toronto bei Eltern auf, die beide Hochschullehrer waren. Schon in jungen Jahren faszinierte ihn der Weltraum, angefacht durch die Apollo-Missionen und die Science-Fiction-Shows Suche und Sternenflotte. Diese frühe Exposition gegenüber Science-Fiction beeinflusste sein Schreiben und führte dazu, dass er zusammen mit einem Mitschüler die high-school-Vereinigung NASFA (Northview Academy Association of Science Fiction Addicts) gründete. Sawyer studierte Radio und Fernsehen an der Ryerson-Universität und nach seinem Abschluss im Jahr 1982 arbeitete er als Dozent an derselben Einrichtung.
Sawyers Karriere als Schriftsteller begann mit der Veröffentlichung seines ersten Romans, Golden Fleece, im Jahr 1989, der eine Adaption von Kurzgeschichten war, die zuvor in der Science-Fiction-Zeitschrift Amazing Stories erschienen waren. Dieses Buch gewann den Aurora Award für den besten kanadischen Science-Fiction-Roman in Englisch. Er erlangte weitere Anerkennung mit seiner Quintaglio-Ascension-Trilogie und seinem preisgekrönten Roman, The Terminal Experiment. Mit über 10 Romanen und zwei Trilogien hat sich Sawyer als bedeutender internationaler Science-Fiction-Autor etabliert. Sein Schreiben wird für seine prägnante Prosa gelobt, die mit der von Isaac Asimov verglichen wurde.
