Robert Penn Warren

Robert Penn Warren war ein berühmter amerikanischer Dichter, Romanschriftsteller und Literaturkritiker, der besonders dafür bekannt ist, einer der Begründer der New Criticism literarischen Theorie zu sein und der einzige Mensch, der Pulitzer-Preise für both Fiction und Poetry gewonnen hat. Warren wurde am 24. April 1905 in Guthrie, Kentucky, geboren und besuchte später die Clarksville High School in Tennessee, Vanderbilt University im Jahr 1925 und die University of California, Berkeley im Jahr 1926. Später erwarb er seinen B. Litt. als Rhodes-Stipendiat von New College, Oxford, in England im Jahr 1930.

Warrens Lehrkarriere begann im Jahr 1930 am Southwestern College (nun Rhodes College) in Memphis, Tennessee. Später unterrichtete er an der Vanderbilt University und der Louisiana State University (LSU). Während seines Aufenthalts an der LSU gründete Warren 1935 zusammen mit Cleanth Brooks das einflussreiche Literaturjournal The Southern Review. Warrens Schreiben spiegelt stark südliche Themen und Denkweisen wider, und er veröffentlichte sein bekanntestes Werk, All the King's Men, während er als Professor an der University of Minnesota tätig war. Später lebte er in Fairfield, Connecticut, und Stratton, Vermont.

Zu Warrens veröffentlichten Werken gehören Gedichtbände, Romane und literarische Kritiken. Zu seinen Gedichtbänden gehören "Thirty-Six Poems" (1936), "Eleven Poems on the Same Theme" (1942), "Promises: Poems 1954-1956" (1957) und "Audubon: A Vision" (1969). Zu seinen Romanen gehören "Night Rider" (1936), "All the King's Men" (1946) und "World Enough and Time" (1950). Zu Warrens literarischen Kritiken gehören "New Directions in Prose and Poetry" (1935), "Understanding Poetry" (1938) und "Selected Essays" (1958).

Warren gewann den Pulitzer Prize for the Novel für "All the King's Men" im Jahr 1947 und den Pulitzer Prize for Poetry im Jahr 1958 für "Promises: Poems 1954-1956" und 1979 für "Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978". Er erhielt auch ein Guggenheim-Stipendium, um 1935 in Italien während der Herrschaft von Benito Mussolini zu studieren. Warren starb am 15. September 1989 aufgrund von Komplikationen von Knochenkrebs.
