Harry Sidebottom ist ein renommierter britischer Historiker und Autor, der besonders durch seine Reihe historischer Romane wie „Throne of the Caesars“ und „Warrior of Rome“ bekannt ist. Sidebottom wurde in Cambridge, England geboren und in Newmarket aufgezogen. Sein Vater arbeitete als Trainer von Rennpferden, wodurch Sidebottom früh mit der Pferderennwelt in Berührung kam. Er besuchte die Fairstead House School und The King's School, Ely, bevor er sein Studium der Alten Geschichte an der Lancaster University aufnahm. Später erwarb Sidebottom einen Masterabschluss an der University of Manchester (1982) und promovierte am Corpus Christi College.
Als Gelehrter konzentriert sich Sidebottom hauptsächlich auf das Studium griechischer Kultur, wobei er sich für Widersprüche und Kompromisse interessiert, die entstehen, wenn eine ältere, raffiniertere Kultur wie Griechenland mit einer jüngeren, weniger zivilisierten Macht wie dem Römischen Reich koexistieren muss. Seine Forschung befasst sich mit klassischem Gedankengut und Kriegsstrategien, die von Römern und Griechen während der klassischen Antike angewandt wurden. Sidebottom hat zahlreiche Rezensionen, Artikel und Kapitel in historischen Büchern veröffentlicht und sich somit als respektierter Gelehrter der Alten Geschichte etabliert. Er hat zudem als Experte für das History Channel Programm „Ancient Discoveries“ gearbeitet.
Neben seiner akademischen Laufbahn ist Sidebottom ein engagierter und erfolgreicher Autor historischer Fiktion. Seine „Warrior of Rome“-Reihe, die aus dreizehn Romanen besteht, folgt dem Schicksal eines römischen Militärtribuns namens Ballista, der sich durch das politische und militärische Geflecht des Römischen Reiches bewegt. In der „Throne of the Caesars“-Reihe, die sechs Romane umfasst, erforscht Sidebottom die Machtkämpfe und Intrigen, die das Römische Reich während des dritten Jahrhunderts prägten. Durch sein Schreiben verleiht Sidebottom der antiken Welt Leben und bietet den Leserners eine farbenfrohe und fesselnde Darstellung historischer Ereignisse und Figuren.
