William Styron

William Styron, der 1925 in Newport News, Virginia, geboren wurde, war ein hochgepriesener amerikanischer Autor von literarischer Fiktion. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schriftsteller seiner Generation, der sein erstes Buch, "Lie Down in Darkness", im Alter von einundzwanzig veröffentlichte. Die Werke von Styron haben einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf die amerikanische Literatur und haben ihm zahlreiche Preise und Anerkennungen eingebracht.

Zu den herausragendsten Werken von Styron gehören "The Confessions of Nat Turner", ein umstrittenes Buch, das den Pulitzer Prize for Fiction gewann, und "Sophie's Choice", ein internationaler Bestseller. Sein Schreiben ist bekannt für seine kraftvolle Erforschung komplexer und oft düsterer Themen, wie Sklaverei, psychische Krankheiten und den Holocaust.

Neben seinen literarischen Leistungen war Styron auch Absolvent der Duke University und Veteran der U.S. Marine Corps. Er wurde mit der Howells Medal, dem American Book Award, der Legion d'Honneur und dem Witness to Justice Award von der Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation ausgezeichnet. Styron lebte den Großteil seines Erwachsenenlebens in Roxbury, Connecticut, und in Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, mit seiner Frau, der Dichterin und Aktivistin Rose Styron, bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 2006. Er ist in Vineyard Haven begraben.
