Bill Pronzini, geboren am 13. April 1943 in Petaluma, Kalifornien, ist ein renommierter US-amerikanischer Autor, der in den Genres Krimi, Thriller, Science-Fiction, Literatur und Fantasy tätig ist. Schon in seiner Kindheit war Pronzini ein begeisterter Leser und entwickelte im Alter von 12 Jahren eine Faszination für Mystery- und Science-Fiction-Digest, die ihn dazu brachte, rund 3000 Pulpmagazine zu sammeln. Bevor Pronzini Vollzeit-Autor wurde, hatte er verschiedene Jobs, wie Zeitungsstand-Angestellter, Sportreporter, Parkplatzwächter, Sanitärarmaturen-Verkäufer, Büro-Typist, Lagerarbeiter und Teilzeit-Zivilangestellter für den Gefangenentransport.
Pronzini ist insbesondere für seine Krimi-Fiktion bekannt, vor allem für die Nameless Detective-Serie. Er hat mehrere andere Serien verfasst, darunter die John Quincannon-Serie. Neben seinen Romanen hat Pronzini als Anthologe bedeutende Beiträge geleistet, indem er über 100 Sammlungen zusammenstellte, von denen viele sich auf Western, Science-Fiction und Mystery-Geschichten konzentrieren.
1987 wurde Pronzini mit dem "The Eye"-Preis für sein Lebenswerk im Krimischreiben von den Shamus Awards ausgezeichnet. Seine bemerkenswerte Karriere umfasst den Gewinn des Shamus Awards Best Novel 1982 für Hoodwink und 1999 für Boobytrap. Er war außerdem ein Nominierter für den Edgar Awards Best Novel 1998 für A Wasteland of Strangers und den Shamus Awards Best Novel 1997 für Sentinels.
Pronzini ist mit der Krimi-Autorin Marcia Muller verheiratet, mit der er häufig zusammenarbeitet. Unter verschiedenen Pseudonymen, darunter Robert Hart Davis, Jack Foxx, William Jeffrey und Alex Saxon, hat Pronzini auch unter Mitwirkung von Jeffrey M. Wallmann Werke veröffentlicht.
