Don DeLillo

Don DeLillo ist ein hochgepriesener US-amerikanischer Autor, der besonders für seine literarischen Fiktionsromane bekannt ist, die detaillierte Darstellungen des amerikanischen Lebens in der späten zweiten Hälfte des 20. und frühen 21. Jahrhunderts bieten. Er hat zahlreiche prestigeträchtige Auszeichnungen für seine Arbeit erhalten, darunter den National Book Award, den PEN/Faulkner Award und den American Book Award. Derzeit wohnt DeLillo in der Nähe von New York City und setzt seine Tätigkeit als Autor fort, wobei er weiterhin kritisch anerkannte Literatur produziert.

DeLillo wurde am 20. November 1936 in eine katholische, Arbeiterfamilie in Molise hineingeboren und verbrachte einen Großteil seiner Kindheit auf der Straße, wo er damit beschäftigt war, sich vorzustellen, er wäre ein Radiomoderator, der Baseballspiele ankündigt. DeLillos Liebe zum Schreiben trat jedoch erst in seinen Zwanzigern und Dreißigern zutage, als er eine persönliche „Goldene Zeit“ des Lesens durchlief. Diese neu entdeckte Leidenschaft für Literatur führte schließlich zu seiner eigenen Schriftstellerlaufbahn. DeLillos erster Job nach dem College war als Parkplatzwächter, wo er während seiner freien Zeit zu lesen begann. Diese Tätigkeit ermöglichte es ihm, breit zu lesen und weckte schließlich sein Interesse am Schreiben.

Im Verlauf seiner Karriere hat DeLillo 15 Romane verfasst und veröffentlicht, darunter "Zero K", "Underworld", "Falling Man", "White Noise" und "Libra". Seine Arbeit wurde weitreichend für ihre Exzellenz anerkannt und er hat zahlreiche Auszeichnungen für seinen Beitrag zur Literatur erhalten. Neben dem National Book Award, dem PEN/Faulkner Award und dem American Book Award wurde DeLillo auch mit dem Jerusalem Prize für sein Gesamtwerk und dem William Dean Howells Medal der American Academy of Arts and Letters ausgezeichnet. 2010 erhielt er den PEN/Saul Bellow Prize und 2012 den Carl Sandburg Literary Award für sein Gesamtwerk. DeLillos jüngster Roman, "Point Omega", wurde 2010 veröffentlicht.
